I am excited to share with you that I have sponsored the commissioning of a new wayside sign that is now on display in Sylvan Lake at the intersection of the Clinton River Trail and Pontiac Dr. The theme of this new wayside sign is “Ordered By Mail – Sent By Rail” and features the kit homes of Sylvan Lake. From about the 1920’s to the 1940’s people could order the parts and materials to build a whole house, a kit home, from the catalogs of Sears Roebuck and Co, Montgomery Ward, Gordon-Van Tine, Sterling System Homes, and Aladdin. The parts and materials would arrive to Sylvan Lake by train (now the Clinton River Trail) and then the homeowner would follow an instruction manual on how to assemble and build their new home.
